Agonising End to great Barton Cup Run Arklow went down to a heart breaking defeat last Saturday July 10 to Elm Park in the quarter final of the Barton Cup. Arklow have never made the semi-finals of the Barton Cup but it was oh so close. With the match standing at 2 all, the final game went to the 20th hole in Elm Park. In a dramatic situation the home team made a fantastic birdie 3 when it looked possible that Arklow might be slight favourites to win the hole and indeed the match. Congratulations to Elm Park on a splendid victory and commiserations to the Arklow squad who put 100% committment into the competition. However further progress was not to be on this occassion. On behalf of the players can we thank the management team of Ivan Burrows, Philip Mc Donald and in particular John Groome, who put in a huge amount of work, time and dedication in generating a terrific team spirit in this year's squad. He really put heart and soul into the competition and gained the total respect of all the players. The players all thank him most sincerely for his leadership, committment and honesty. Finally on behalf of the squad we would like to thank the Captain, President, Lady Captain, the Vice Captain and all the supporters who turned out for the Garden County and the Barton Cup matches for their support. It did make a difference and we appreciated the time and effort of all the supporters. Thanks to Dave Williams for all the reports which were read by hundreds and made the campaign that much more exciting.
